The new hollow-core fibres from Microsoft and ORC, Southampton break a 40-year limit on light transmission.

This work is special to me because hollow-core fibers represent a new way to carry light. Rather than trapping light inside glass, they let it move mostly through air, which greatly reduces loss and distortion. The latest progress brings this technology much closer to real applications - faster internet connections, quicker data transfer, and new possibilities for AI data centers and high-power laser systems.
It’s an exciting moment for the field, as this technology could reshape how we think about high-speed communication, data centers and even quantum networks. I’m grateful to be part of the conversation and to see this topic featured in such a high impact and respected journal.

Invited speaker at the Optical Fiber Communication Confernece (OFC)

Dr. Habib has been invited workshop presenter in ‘Anti-Resonant Hollow Core Fiber: The Hype, The Hope, The Headaches’ at OFC 2026, which is scheduled from 15-19 March at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Los Angeles, California, USA.
Title: Recent Advances in Next-generation Optical Fibers: Applications and Beyond

Abstract: Over the last 25 years, the field of fiber optics has experienced remarkable progress, contributing to the widespread expansion of the Internet and bringing about transformative changes in various domains such as quantum communication and sensing, industrial manufacturing, directed energy, non-invasive laser surgery, early cancer detection, optical microscopy, and biomedical sensing. Undoubtedly, one of the most significant innovations in this field is the development of hollow-core anti-resonant fiber (HC-ARF). HC-ARF offers several promising and unrivaled features such as exceptionally well-confined photons inside the core offering an ideal platform for studying prolonged, well-controlled and diffraction free light-matter interaction in Raman active and inactive gases; low-loss, multi-octave wide transmission, adjustable pressure dispersion; and can tolerate GW of power, not possible to obtain in any waveguides or fibers. This talk will cover the most recent advanced optical fibers for applications in high-energy laser delivery system, ultrafast non-linear dynamics, and beyond.

Dr. Habib has been selected in the Photonics100 2024 list

Dr. Habib has been included Photonics100 2024 list for “The development of ultra-low loss hollow-core fibers and new light source designs”.

For over a decade, I’ve had the privilege of working in the ever-evolving field of photonics, advancing the development of ultra-low-loss hollow-core fibers that enable breakthroughs in long-distance communications, data center optical networks, and cloud computing.
At Florida Tech and Relativity Networks, Inc. (start up company), we continue advancing next-generation optical fibers and strengthening our impact worldwide. I’m excited to keep building this journey together with our vibrant community.

Top downloaded paper in Optica

Our work on the delivery of a record 2.2 kW laser power with an input spectral linewidth of 86 GHz, centered at 1080 nm is among the September, 2023 top downloads in Optica!
